Complete Guide to Taming Animals in Once Human

Complete Guide to Taming Animals in Once Human

From 15th August, you are now able to tame animals in Once human! This is an excellent step in the right direction to creating a lot more content for players. During this update, the developers have allowed players to tame and capture animals, which is amazing although, at this current date, we are unable to breed them.

The purpose of taming animals in the current game state is to get you some by-product passively, such as milk from the deers or even have some, tames like bears to protect your base from intruders. We are hoping in the future, they will bring a reason to breed them so you can have your very own farm and produce resources to use on your team or sell to others.

We have also thought about how the developers could go down the Ark Survive Evolved pathway and potentially create events that give unique colors, such as pink for Valentine’s day. This would then create additional reasons to trade and breed them and share with others.

Preparing To Capture An Animal

Now, in order to tame an animal of your choice, we need to prepare a few things first. Head to the Memetic tab in your menu screen and then head to the Logistics tab and scroll down to stage 4. You may now notice an extra 2 memetics. Animal Capture and Animal Taming. You will need to unlock both of these. So you can feed your new animals and, of course, capture them.

Once you have unlocked the Memetics, go to your Supplies Workbench and you will now see the Tranquilizer Throwing Needles in the menu.

The crafting cost for these Tranquilizer Throwing Needles are:

  • 3 Steel Ingots
  • 8 Engineering Plastic
  • 5 Rubber
  • 3 Stardust Source

It is highly recommended you craft a fair number of these, as it can be tough to hit your targets when using them.

What Animals Can You Tame in Once Human?

Now that you have crafted your Tranquilizer throwing needles, it’s time to determine which animals you want on your land. You can only have a total of 6 livestock on your territory, which means you will have to swap them in and out. By placing them in a storage crate, then placing them down when you wish to use that animal.

We have put together a table below, showing all the animals that are tameable and what they eat and provide.

Capturing an Animal

Its time to set off and go hunting for the animal you wish. We will for some Deer, because we can obtain milk from these and use the brewing barrel to make cheese for cooking.

Deer is very common to find, but a good spot for Rabbits, Boars and Deer is next to the teleportation tower in Chalk Peaks (In-game coordinates 2142, -3455).

Once you are at the location, it’s time to put Tranquilizer Throwing needles on your hot bar. Locate the target you wish to capture, and you will notice the gender of the animal (which will become breeding in future) and the health bar is more a health meter. Your task is to lower the health enough of the animal to be behind the line.

A good tip to make it easy for you, is to bring a lower tier weapon with you. This will allow you to do less damage to it, so you do not accidentally kill it.

Now the health is behind the bar. Equip your throwing needles from your hot bar, and you will need to throw it at the animal. If it’s been hit correctly, it will fall to the ground, and you can click the “Capture” button and capture it.

This will now appear in your backpack, hunt as many as you wish. If your backpack is full due to the weight, remember you can always put them in the trunk of your vehicle.

Animal Grades

When you capture your new animals, you will notice a “grade” of the animal. This can vary between a C grade to an S grade. S tier is what you are looking to find because this can give you 4 random traits, such as increase taming speed or increase the yield when you slaughter the animal.

In the future, the grade will also affect the amount of breeding attempts the animal does too. So, your goal is to find the higher tier animals.

  • Grade C – 1 Trait
  • Grade B – 2 Traits
  • Grade A – 3 Traits
  • Grade S – 4 Traits

Caring For Your Animal

After you have tamed your animals, and you are happy with their grades. It’s time to set up a location where you wish to keep them safe and get them fed.

Depending on the animals you wish to put into a pen, will determine if you need to separate them too. We have deer and rabbits in the same pen with no issues, but if you try to put a bear next door, it will swipe through the wall and try to kill the deer. So, be careful with how you build your pen.

It is a simple case of creating a pen by using railings or walls and boxing them in so they can’t get out and are protected from any intruders.

Please note – The Nutcracker deviant and your turrets will shoot your own animals until they are tamed, so make sure these are put away before placing your animal in the pen.

Once you have created a animal pen that you like the look of, go ahead and place an animal trough. This can be unlocked in the memetics tab, in the logistics menu.

Now it is time to place your animals in their new home. Open up your inventory and select the animal you wish to put down on the “Tools” tab. Press the F key, this will allow you to place it where you wish. So it can be safe from any danger.

Once you are happy with all of this, interact with your animal. You will notice the different levels. The most important ones will be its food and water. You can either drop the food on the floor and the animal will walk over to it and eat it, or you can interact with the trough and place it in there.

We highly recommend using a water pump and filtration system to create purified water, then putting it in the trough. This is the best, so you will not need to top the trough up much.

For a short term solution for Deer’s. You can pick wheat from the Wheat fields in Citrus County (In-game Coordinates 5677, -5335) then place it in the trough.

For a longer term solution, we highly recommend crafting the animal feed in the kitchen. You will unlock these recipes when you unlock the Animal Taming Memetic.

There are 4 in total for different types of animals. These provide your animals with a good amount of food, but they also have 6 days before they expire in the trough.

If you want to stock pile food for your animals, add them to your fridge where they get 69 days shelf life.

  • Grain Concentrate Feed
  • Herbal Green Feed
  • Meat Pellet Feed
  • Body Boost Feed – Enhances an animal’s physical functions and raises all its attributes to Lv 50.

This will be the very basics to keep your animal safe and alive until it grows and has a 100% tameness.

Fully Tamed Animal

During your time caring for your animals, you will notice the tameness going up. When Tameness reaches level 20, it will unlock the first trait but will not produce any supplies (like milk). Then, when your animal reaches tameness level 50. It will unlock its second trait and your animals will start to produce supplies. Tameness level 80 unlocks the third trait and then Tameness level 100 for the fourth trait.

51-100% tameness in your animal is where you can make the next decision. You can interact with certain animals like the female deer to get by-products like milk, or you can slaughter them for hide and meat. We personally do not think this is worth it as it is early stages, and you can get way more hide and meat in a quicker time with the Lethal Rabbit deviant.

If you have decided to raise a Bear or a Wolf or a Crocodile, then we recommend that you craft a Whistle in the Supplies Bench and you can summon your pet by your side to fight off any enemies.
