Beginners Class in Dark and Darker
The Beginners Class in Dark and Darker has to be the Fighter. The dungeons are known to be unforgiving and even the AI enemies can put up a fight, The Fighter is a well-rounded class allowing you to kill the AI easily with your trusty shield and has perks to keep you alive to get you to that blue portal or dive down into the inferno using the red portals.
The Strongest Starting Kit
The Fighter comes with a sword and shield, allowing you to defend yourself easily whilst putting out good damage against AI and other players you may see in the dungeon. You also start with a bandage allowing you to heal yourself. This is the Class for Beginners in Dark and Darker, especially for you to learn the maps, how to fight each different AI, and get used to the inevitable PvP you will encounter along your journey.
Strong Perks and Skills
The Fighter has a good selection of perks depending on play style. Allowing for options of aggressive or defensive games. With perks providing more defensive rating, allowing you to use any weapon you find in the dungeon, and even dual wield perks. There will be options for everyone. Using a collection of defensive perks allows you to fight almost every other character with ease. Perks like Counterattack, Barricade and Shield Mastery; will make anyone dislike fighting you. The Fighter also has a wide range of skills, from the fan-favorite second wind and sprint to taunts to help your party fight through big rooms of AI.
Blocking Mechanics
Blocking is a fundamental skill in Dark and Darker, but it might not be as simple as it looks. The blocking mechanic on Dark and Darker works on the trajectory of the weapon swing, Meaning if you were to be attacked by an overhead swing, a simple block whilst looking at your enemy wont suffice. You will have to look up to cover your face from that overhead swing.
The same goes for wide-side slashes, with weapons like the Falchion or even big 2 handed War Mauls. A simple block may not protect you, In order to defend yourself from these attacks you will have to block the path of that swing. The size of the weapon will also come into play here, If you are fighting against someone with a large weapon such as the Battle Axe or weapons alike, you have to make sure the weapon doesn’t go over your shield and still hit you. This means you may have to create distance, or close distance in these fights depending on what you are fighting.
As you can see with our test dummy Goblin, His overhead attack wouldn’t be blocked by a simple “forward facing” block, In order to block this particular attack you may have to look up and left to stop the axe from hitting you and or going over your shield. Once you get the block mechanic down, everyone will hate fighting against you.
With a couple of different shields at your disposal, you can also block with the Longsword allowing for fast parries and devastating combos. But be warned the block range on the longsword is much smaller than what the shield offers so make sure to get some practice in.
Weaknesses to Fighters
The only real weakness to fighters is one simple mechanic that can be done my many, Kiting. Unless you have a ranged weapon like a crossbow/bow Wizards and Rangers are going to have an easier time fighting you, if they maintain their distance whilst slinging spells and arrows at you, by the time you get into Melee distance you’re going to be weak, or at least weak enough to pop second wind. Then its rinse and repeat. However, if you play smart, use tight corridors or back them into corners to show them where you shine. Spells and arrows can be blocked by a shield, so don’t worry too much about the magic missiles – block and stop them from hitting your ankles.
