City of Heroes Homecoming Information
Today, NCSoft gave City of Heroes Homecoming an official license to continue running and to continue development. The Homecoming team is sharing answers to questions community members have for the game. This includes what this news even means, new terms of service agreements and a requirement to use the Homecoming launcher eventually.
This official announcement gives a lot of room to continue the life of City of Heroes for the community that loves the game. The hope is that all CoH servers and userbases will consolidate as one under this new licensing agreement.
Words from the Development Team
The City of Heroes Homecoming Developers spoke out soon after the official announcement:
“This agreement provides a framework under which Homecoming can operate the game in a way that complies with NCSOFT’s wishes”. There is hope that this is an official sign that there is no longer a chance of CoH shutting down, as a result of the Homecoming team’s good relationship with NCSoft. You can also continue to stream and monetize content for the game as long as there isn’t a paywall to access said content!
What does this mean for City of Heroes?
With new terms, the game will remain free, with accounts and characters staying on the official server. As a result, there’ll be no rollbacks of any kind. The main form of monetization will be through community donations to keep supporting the team. This includes legal expenses and other expenses throughout the deal.
City of Heroes Homecoming is a beloved game, remember by many in the Superhero universe. The new license does not require the CoH team to pay fees. However, costs will increase due to an expansion of the dev team and the closed-source nature of development, as a result of NCSoft controlling and owning the IP. So make sure to keep supporting the team! Keep an eye on this project, it is definitely one to watch!
