11.6 Billion Won
The KFTC (Korean Fair Trade Commission) has fined Nexon Korea Corp a total of 11.6 Billion Won ($8.9 Million) after concluding Nexon had mislead customers with unfair or non existent drop chances in their online hit titles Maplestory and Bubble Fighter.
When Cubes (Loot boxes) got introduced into Maplestory around may 2010 Nexon had set the odds of obtaining each reward to be identical, this would all change in a patch later that same year where Nexon started to skew the odds in their favor. Players started to notice the more coveted drops where dropping less and less, some didn’t drop at all causing major outrage amongst the playerbase. Especially because players where paying up to 2000 Won ($1,50) a “Cube”.
Nexon had already recieved a similar fine back in 2018 for similar violations in their game “Sudden Attack” they where fined roughly 939 million won ($720,000) KFTC’s Kim Jung-ki, director of the market surveillance department had this to say about the fine: “We imposed the largest fine because the Cube is a core product of the game (Maple Story), the period of the violation is long and this is the second violation (by Nexon) following Sudden Attack,”
