League of Legends is a famous game developed by Riot Games in 2009, and within the past few years, they have developed different titles that are similar to League of Legends but with different game mechanics such as Legends of Runeterra and Team Fight Tactics.
League of Legends MMO is on its way
Way back in 2020, Greg Street, the Vice President of IP and Entertainment at Riot, hinted that they would be working on a new title that would be derived from the League of Legends universe.
“I have news! My recent job at Riot has been to help develop the League universe, which we’re going to need! Because it is time. My new job is to kick off a big (some might say massive) game that many of you, and many Rioters, have been asking us to create. PS We’re hiring” – Greg Street, Vice President of IP and Entertainment
This is soon confirmed by Riot Games as they made an entirely new page stating that they are making an MMO game.
In addition to this, Riot and Greg Street stated that the company is now hiring and recruiting multiple game developers and designers specifically those who have experience in doing game engineering, game designs, UX designs, game arts, and game production. As per the requirements, the company is encouraging those who are interested but are anxious about the requirements to still submit an application. The company will also provide various perks for the employee that are shown at the bottom of the said page.
As of May, the co-founder of Riot Games, Marc Merrill, tweeted about Greg Street stepping down from his role at Riot Games followed by some updates regarding the MMO.
When is the expected release date?
There is no given date for the release but it is expected to kick off in mid-2024. Since it is a massive project with a lot of people excited about it, it would take years to finish and to make sure that it will be enjoyable for the players.
It is understandable that the company will take this amount if time because of how complex developing MMORPGs are. They also announced it early as a strategy to hype the game up as per usual with MMO games.
What should we expect from it?
Riot Games hasn’t released any information about the gameplay for their MMO but it is possible that it will be the same as the other MMOs where you can choose from a variety of races. According to the developers it will take place in Runeterra.

As we are nearing the year 2024, Riot Games may release new information about the League of Legends MMO, especially about its game mechanics and how the League of Legends lore will be applied to the game. To sum it up the League of Legends MMO will be hyped up as we get near the expected release date, and it will either surpass the expectations of the Rioters or it will fail just like the other MMO games. Since there are a lot of MMO games that are going to be released soon it will be a tough competition between the genres.
