When talking about Steam and their platform we are usually left in the dark when it comes to numbers, obviously we will never know the full details when it comes to gross revenue but looking at the Best Of 2023 list we still see a few unexpected entries and a possible new trend.
The List
- Counter Strike 2
- PUBG Battlegrounds
- Apex Legends
- Dota 2
- Baldurs Gate 3
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Call Of Duty Modern Warfare (2/3, WZ)
- Starfield
- Lost Ark
- Cyberpunk 2077
- Sons Of The Forest
While there is a few clear standouts we’d like to turn our attention to the two surprise entries, Lost Ark and Sons Of The Forest. Lost Ark originally broke steam but quickly lost its player count due to what players described as an unfun gameplay loop and heavy pay to win aspects, dropping from 1.3 million concurrent players to a comparatively low 40.000 average peak player count. Making it quite a surprise to see it mentioned on a list like this.
Sons Of The Forest follows a completely different story, breaking the studios own expectations and clearly breaking the charts as well with record sales. Sons Of The Forest currently still remains in early access with a planned 1.0 release in 2024.
A Good Year For Free To Play Titles On Steam
While Free To Play games aren’t new to lists like these the shear amount of them was surprising, out of the 12 games mentioned in the “Platinum” tier a whopping 6 of them are fully Free To Play. Note that all 6 of these are multiplayer or games compared to the other games being either co-op or single player. Its quite the contrast and it does make us wonder if we will be seeing more studios swap to the Free To Play model.
