In Throne and Liberty, your gear level is crucial to your overall character power and gear progression. However, there is a slightly deeper progression system that is responsible for most of your gear power at the end-game – the Gear Traiting system. Understanding this system will help you optimize your gear power and avoid early traiting mistakes that could cost you a lot of time to fix later. This article provides a beginner-focused overview of everything you need to know about traiting your weapons and gear.
What is Gear Traiting?
Every piece of gear and weapon in Throne and Liberty comes with certain fixed stats and one trait at level one. Traits are randomly chosen from a list specific to each item. You can view the full list of possible traits by clicking on the item and selecting the Trait List icon from the context menu. This will display the traits the item can have, their percentage chance and other items that share these traits.
Trait Levels and Item Quality
- Green Items: Can have up to 2 traits and each trait can be leveled up once
- Blue Items: Can have up to 3 traits and each trait can be leveled up two additional times
- Purple Items: Can have up to 3 traits and each trait can be leveled up three additional times
Leveling Up Traits
To level up a trait, you need another item with the same trait to be in your inventory and not equipped on your character. The item doesn’t need to be an exact copy but it needs to be of the same item type. So for treating your boots, for example, you will need any boots with the same trait and to level a weapon trait, you will need any weapon with the same trait. This only applies to unlocked traits – unlocking the trait on an item for the first time works a bit differently and will be discussed in the next section.
To level up your existing traits, follow these simple steps:
- Go to the Equipment Enchanting menu and select the Trait tab.
- Click on the item you want to enhance.
- If you have suitable items, they will appear on the right. Select the correct item and press Enchant to level your trait.
You can use items of the same quality for guaranteed trait leveling or lower-quality items for a 10% chance. Failed traiting attempts with lower-quality items will give Blessing points, which can be used to improve your chances or guarantee success in future traiting attempts.
Unlocking Additional Traits
To unlock new traits on an item, you need an exact copy of the item with the desired trait. For instance, to add a new trait to Witch’s Linen Pants, you need another pair of Witch’s Linen Pants with the new trait. Press the Add Trait button to unlock it.
For Purple quality items, you have an additional option of directly unlocking traits using Trait Unlockstones, which are earned through in-game activities and events.
In the Equipment Enchanting menu go to the Traiting tab and click the tick mark next to the locked trait, then pick the desired trait from the list. This process will cost you more Trait Unlockstones depending on item quality (currently varies from 50 to 200 stones for various tiers of Purple items).
Trait Conversion
If an item has a trait that doesn’t work for you, use Conversion Potions from trader NPCs in major cities to swap it for another trait. Go to Equipment Enchanting, select the trait to convert, and click the cyclical arrows icon next to it. Ensure you have an exact copy of the item with the desired trait or enough Trait Unlockstones for Purple items.
Bonus Tip: Blessings Stacking
Blessings Stacking is an advanced traiting trick that is not part of core Throne and Liberty systems. Still, it can be very useful at certain points in the game to maximize your traiting effectiveness and potentially minimize the amount of Lucent you need to spend on traits for high-quality items. Blessings Stacking is not mandatory and you can completely skip this if you don’t care about min-maxing in this game. The trick involves intentionally failing trait enchantments on cheap items to accumulate Blessing points, which can then be transferred to more valuable items for guaranteed trait upgrades. Here’s how it works:
- Use a cheap blue item and feed it green items with basic traits like Health Regen until you max out the trait.
- Replace the trait with another cheap one and repeat the process.
- Accumulate enough Blessing points, then transfer them to a purple item for guaranteed upgrades using cheaper blue items.
This method is very dependent on Auction House prices and overall server gear progression and requires careful planning. You would be looking to utilize this trick when the server has such an abundance of lower-quality (i.e. green) items that it is much cheaper to accumulate blessings rather than adding a fresh expensive trait such as “Heavy Attack Chance”.
